Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts strongly encourages students to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities as part of their liberal arts education. We also realize that such activities are sometimes beyond the reach of students whose
personal financial resources are limited.
Eugene Lang Opportunity Awards make it easier for students with financial need and academic merit to participate in the many co-curricular programs and initiatives available at Lang. A number of awards up to $5,000 are made every fall
and spring semester and every winter and summer break. Funds are limited and are distributed competitively according to the college's judgment of the educational quality and budget of a student's proposal and the applicant's financial need and academic
standing.
Application Deadline
October 30 (original deadline extended)
April 9
Applicants will be notified of the decision three weeks after the deadline. Please note that payments for the award can take up to four weeks to process.
If you would like help thinking through and writing your proposal, make an
appointment with an ELOA graduate assistant in October. This is the perfect opportunity to learn how to present and highlight your ideas in a compelling manner, especially if you are new
to the process of applying for a grant.

Award Types
There are two distinct categories of Opportunity Awards:
Innovation Awards are awarded competitively to fund students' self-designed co-curricular and extracurricular educational activities.
Outreach Awards are awarded competitively to students who need financial assistance in order to take part in institutional co-curricular activities offered by Lang and/or the university, such as those developed by Civic Engagement and
Social Justice, Career Development, and Study Abroad.

Completion Requirement
The awarding committee may offer students partial funding on their application; students have the option to accept the award based on the amount to be received. Students who receive awards choose two payment dates: The majority of the award is received in the first payment; the second payment is received at the completion of the project. All students are required to confirm their initial reporting plan from their application and complete a final report which includes sharing information that showcases their project to the Lang community. These entries should reflect on the quality of their experience
and its contribution to their Lang education. Award recipients will work with a mentor of their choosing throughout their project. This voluntary role is assumed primarily by faculty, but it is also open to staff at The New School. The mentor's main
responsibility is to check in with the awardee at the mid-point of the experience and to review the awardee's final blog post. If their chosen mentor is unavailable, the student will work with an advisor from the Student Life and Outreach Committee.
In addition, Eugene Lang Opportunity Award recipients are expected to participate in the Lang Dean’s Honor Symposium (students apply to the symposium in the fall semester and enroll in a special symposium class in the spring semester). Students receiving
awards on the fall deadline (and spring deadline, if timing allows) are encouraged to feature their work in the poster session of the Honor Symposium or apply the following fall to be part of a presentation panel.
Eugene Lang Opportunity Awards are made possible by a generous gift from Eugene M. Lang and the support of the following Eugene Lang College offices and committees: the Dean's Office, Academic Advising and Student Support, the Office of Civic Engagement and Social Justice, and the Student Life and Outreach Committee.
