  • Virtual Tour

  • Journalism + Design is an interdisciplinary program combining the rigorous critical thinking of Lang with creative design thinking. You learn reporting and design skills needed to open up new professional avenues in today's complex, competitive media ecosystem and develop the creative capacity to thrive in any field that values imagination, agility, and insight.

    • Study Options Major, Minor

In an age of nonstop digital information and misinformation, fact-based storytelling is more vital to the democratic process than ever. Journalism + Design majors become grounded in the fundamentals of serious journalism while being pushed to expand its boundaries. The curriculum also gives you the flexibility focus on your own areas of interest, whether complex issues of class, race, and criminal and social justice or local news and cultural life (music, food, fashion, theatre, fine arts) of New York City.

As a student in the Journalism + Design program, you:

    • Learn how to report and tell rich news stories across a broad range of media
    • Receive training in how to cultivate sources, ask hard questions, and conduct in-depth interviews
    • Gain exposure to data reporting and design methodologies to build engaging reader experiences
    • Develop the skills and craft you need to become an evidence-based storyteller relying on accuracy, transparency, and the ability to convey complex subjects in service of the public good

    Learning from Leaders

Lang's Journalism + Design program was created in consultation with some of the most prominent minds in news innovation as well as traditional journalism. Advisors and friends of the program come from the New York Times, The Guardian, ProPublica, The Center for Investigative Reporting, WNYC, and The Knight Foundation. In addition, close collaboration with Parsons School of Design creates opportunities to study interactive design, editorial design, data visualization, photojournalism, illustration, mobile design, and media business management.

    Connecting to New York City

While it offers the atmosphere and intimacy of a small college, Eugene Lang College is part of The New School, a major progressive university in New York City. Our location in the world's media capital presents a wealth of opportunities and allows you to engage directly and deeply with the myriad issues that confront NYC. Our students have interned at professional news organizations such as the New York Times, The Guardian, "Buzzfeed," "CNN," ProPublica, Rolling Stone, Thomson/Reuters, and WNYC.

    Career Paths

News organizations and media companies are eager to hire people grounded in fundamental reporting and ethics who can also creatively develop and design solutions for 21st-century journalism. Journalism + Design majors may go on to work as digital journalists or writers or pursue advanced studies in journalism, design, or media studies.

Consult our 4-Year Lang Career Pathways Map (PDF) for helpful steps and resources to link your academic journey to your future plans. If you are planning to pursue graduate studies, consider applying to the Bachelor's-Master's program, which enables you to earn graduate credits that will apply to both your Lang degree and a master's degree in Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism at The New School for Social Research.
