Students combine their passion with inspirational training as they prepare for a career as dramatic writers of theater, film, and television. Students explore emotional and behavioral truth, and develop an awareness and understanding of the range and depth of human experiences. Graduates enter the performing arts industry as citizen artists, fusing writing, directing, and acting together, while also exploring contemporary issues related to social justice.
Playwriting students train with some of the most highly accomplished dramatists in the country. These faculty will become your mentors, sharing their extensive expertise in all types of media and their first-hand knowledge of the current professional landscape.
BFA in Dramatic Arts students hone their writing craft and artistic vision by taking foundation courses in playwriting, as well as in acting, directing, and creative technologies, cultivating well-rounded dramatic artists. Students can chart their own course by choosing electives based on their interests, gaining knowledge and inspiration from courses in the liberal arts, design, media, entrepreneurship, and more from across The New School's colleges.
In the School of Drama's three-year MFA in Contemporary Theatre and Performance, writers explore the intersections between dramatic writing, performance, directing, and technology alongside a selective cohort of passionate peers, working in traditional and experimental forms and building their capacities not only as writers but also as collaborative artists. Students build a portfolio of produced pieces, including 10-minute plays, one-acts, and full-lengths. A making-based approach means students develop practical, multidisciplinary skills across a wide range of performance environments — onstage, on screen, or out in the community.
