About

The New School offered the first academic creative writing workshop in 1931 and pioneered a new philosophy of education. The idea: Students would make their own lives and their own stories part of their education. Today, The New School continues to celebrate and cultivate daring and diverse new voices through its creative writing program.

The Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing offers concentrations in Arts Writing, Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, or Writing for Children and Young Adults.

Outcomes

Alumni of the MFA program write, edit, and publish an average of 40 books each year, as well as essays, poems, and short stories in literary journals and magazines. Along with being published writers, our graduates go on to become celebrated teachers, editors, publishers, and media professionals.

When you apply to the Creative Writing Program at The New School, you take an important step toward making a serious commitment to your writing life. Our graduate admission team is available to assist you in selecting the right program and learning about funding opportunities.

University

Our undergraduate, graduate, and student teams host a wide range of admission events throughout the year. You can learn all about our programs, the process of applying or transferring, preparation of a portfolio or audition repertoire, and life inside our classrooms and on our New York City campus.
Our Welcome Center building is located at 72 Fifth Avenue, on the corner of 13th Street, and is open weekdays.
Those interested in learning more about our academic programs, admission requirements, or campus life are invited to connect online with a Welcome Center student assistant through our Welcome Center Virtual Desk. Virtual desk hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. No appointment is necessary.

  These appointments provide potential graduate applicants with the opportunity to meet individually with an Admission counselor to identify the best-fit program and discuss the admission process.

- Campus Tours
  
  Student-led campus tours introduce visitors to our academic facilities. Student housing is not included. Only those with appointments will be able to tour campus. Please register for the tour most appropriate for your interests:
  Graduate Programs Campus Tours are 60-minute student-led campus tours that introduce visitors to the graduate academic facilities at Parsons School of Design, the Schools of Public Engagement, and/or The New School for Social Research. These tours provide a general and broad overview of campus buildings used by graduate students at The New School. Those seeking a more focused introduction to a particular area of study are encouraged to connect directly with program chairs or faculty.
