  • Sometimes students are asked to present a certified and notarized copy of a document. The Registrar’s Office can provide certification and notarization free of charge for any documents issued by our office, such as transcripts, enrollment verifications, and diplomas, including photocopies of your original diploma.

Certification is the addition by our office of a signed statement to the document indicating that it is an original document (or a true and correct copy) issued by the university.

Notarization is a process in which a staff member signs a statement on the document in the presence of the notary, who then places an official stamp or seal near the signature. This tells the recipient of the document that a representative of The New School has signed the statement and that the document is authentic.

Apostille is the authentication of a document by the Department of State. If you are an international student and/or plan to work outside the United States, you may need to have your documents legally recognized by a foreign country in order to be used there. In many countries, this is done by acquiring an apostille.

The notary public is not an attorney licensed to practice law and may not give legal advice about immigration or any other legal matter or accept fees for legal advice.

If you have any questions about the certification, notarization, and/or apostille process, please contact us at [email protected].
