Human Resources is committed to helping staff at the university innovate, learn, and support others. We are happy to announce that we are accepting nominations and applications for this year’s cohorts of the New School Leadership and Essential Management Skills for Emerging Leaders programs.

Cohort-style leadership development programs offer staff members an opportunity to collaborate to develop skills, including emotional intelligence; enhance interpersonal communication; break functional silos; and tackle challenges in real time.

New School Leadership Program Cohort 3: Career Path Levels 6 and 7
We are excited to continue the important leadership development work begun in January 2019. The need for strong and resilient leadership is more critical than ever, and the university is committed to providing a cohort learning opportunity for 20 to 22 high performing senior staff members at career path levels 6 and 7 to further this development. HR will be accepting nominations for participants from the President’s Leadership Team and Executive Deans.

The upcoming leadership training program will focus on:

• Building High Performance Hybrid Teams
• Emotional Intelligence and Resilience
• Leadership Preferences and Strengths
• Individual and Team Alignment

Essential Management Skills for Emerging Leaders Cohort 2: Career Path Level 5
As we prepare to return to campus as a hybrid administration, the content in this program is more relevant than ever. Thirty-five employees at career path level 5 will have the opportunity to apply to participate in the program with the support of their supervisor. The program focuses on:

• Understanding the life cycle of an employee—from recruiting and onboarding to evaluating and developing to rewarding and retaining
• Setting goals and managing priorities
• Solving problems
• Communicating and relating with others

In accordance with our ongoing commitment to helping employees realize their potential and efforts to create a vibrant culture that helps employees succeed, enhances productivity, and values diversity, Human Resources will be running programs and offering services that reflect the continuing changes in our daily lives and improve the remote working experience.

Employee Assistance Program
The New School offers employees and their household members EAP and work/life benefits through Aetna Resources for Living. Inquiries and services are provided at no cost to you and are completely confidential. Visit the website for more information. LinkedIn Learning
All employees have access to LinkedIn Learning thanks to our enterprise subscription, managed by the university’s Libraries and Archives. Additional information can be viewed here.

Mentorship Circles
Mentorship circles are small virtual networking groups facilitated by New School leaders who act as mentors and guides to those within the circle. These circles provide a setting in which participants can network and support one another’s personal and professional growth through monthly discussions about topics ranging from leadership to day-to-day realities of the university. It is up to each circle to decide what they would like to focus on as they meet regularly during the year.

New School Career and Professional Development Program
The Career and Professional Development Program is open to employees who are independent contributors interested in enhancing their skills in their current roles and gaining insights into career development. The program teaches employees to identify and apply strengths, communicate effectively, foster productive workplace relationships, and network across the university.

The program is designed to provide a cohort-style experience for those who are interested in participating in all five sessions, although it is also beneficial to those who would like to register for individual sessions.

Human Resources is committed to providing a comprehensive onboarding program and extending a warm welcome to new members of our community. New employees are invited to an orientation program and training programs, in which they become acquainted with who we are and all of our systems. New employees join a cohort that periodically comes together both in person and virtually to foster belonging and trust and explore how each community member can apply their own uniqueness and creativity to support our students and institutional mission.  

All staff at The New School are key to furthering the university’s mission. The dedication of The New School staff fuels learning and creativity across the university. While managers play a pivotal role in helping with staff engagement, Human Resources also wants to help employees feel involved, respected, appreciated and successful. There are a number of ways to connect with us: through staff events, pulse surveys, stay interviews, or joining a learning or career program. Human Resources is dedicated to maximizing the work experience for all staff.

The Organizational Development team provides comprehensive internal consulting and facilitation services to the colleges and administrative units upon request. We partner across the university to help areas manage complex changes and improve their organizational effectiveness, sharing strategies and guidance that enable departments to realize their potential and mission. Our goal is to help departments deliver positive and lasting contributions to their constituents and The New School community at-large.

In the event that departments seek outside facilitation services, the Organizational Development team is available to offer support by reviewing and evaluating proposals, negotiating fees, and providing guidance throughout the process.
