  • University Planning

  • Our 100-year legacy as a university dedicated to courageous change drives our ongoing commitment to planning for a distinctive, relevant, and boldly creative future.

The arrival of President Dwight A. McBride in April 2020 signaled a new beginning for The New School and the initiation of a robust strategic planning process. The COVID-19 pandemic and its financial impact on the university imposed a different planning timeline.

In the summer and fall of 2020, The New School began an intensive process of decision making to address the impact of COVID-19. Read more about the impact of COVID-19 on the university’s finances, and the measures taken to respond.

With the most urgent phase of decision making completed by October 2020, a steering committee was established and charged with ensuring that The New School’s administrative functioning is strong enough to meet the university’s changing needs in spite of streamlined staffing levels. This phase is expected to be completed in spring 2021.

With this critical work completed, the university will be well positioned to launch a full-scale strategic planning process in spring 2021. That process will incorporate work begun by the Liberal Arts+ Task Force in fall 2020. (Watch this space for more information as that process develops.)

University planning honors and relies upon the respective fiduciary, leadership, and governance roles of our Board of Trustees, President, President’s Leadership Team, University Deans, Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, and Student Senate. Ongoing, broad community input is always valued and occurs through formal and informal meetings, surveys, and other forms of engagement.
