If you are struggling with a health matter that interferes with your academic performance, you may be able to take a health-related leave of absence from the university. Your academic advisor can help you with the process. If you decide to take a health leave, you must submit an exit form. A student support hold will be placed on your student account, preventing you from registering for classes until you complete the return process. As soon as the office of Student Support and Advocacy receives your exit form, you will receive an email (at your New School address) outlining the steps you will need to take to return from a health leave. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the process, which is described below.
Return from Health Leave
When you are ready to return to The New School, you need to notify the university in writing by emailing [email protected]. In your email, briefly explain the reasons for your leave and detail the care you received while on leave.
You also need to provide documentation from healthcare professionals that demonstrates that you received appropriate treatment while on leave. Your letter of documentation should be comprehensive and grant the university permission to obtain additional information as needed. The letter should be emailed to [email protected] and include:
- Dates of treatment and diagnosis
- A description of the course of treatment and prognosis
- Ongoing treatment recommendations
- A statement of professional opinion that you are ready to return to the university
