  • The fall 2020 semester at the Schools of Public Engagement (SPE) will be a vibrant and engaging semester, offered online. Students in all SPE schools and programs will have a highly relevant and individualized learning experience. You will also have access to special signature courses developed for this moment in time, as well as the world-class events and public programs that our community of students has long enjoyed.

    • Most online courses will offer real-time weekly discussion via Zoom (synchronous)
    • Many online courses will be available on your own schedule via Canvas (asynchronous)
    • Dedicated Student Affairs staff are on hand to provide individualized advising and can answer any questions you may have about designing your learning experience

We hope to be able to offer some limited small-group activities on campus later in the fall. As your safety is of paramount concern, decisions about any possible on-campus activities will follow guidelines from the City and State of New York.

    Key Features

    • In alignment with the university's 2020-2021 academic plan, all SPE courses, across all schools and programs, will be available online to students anywhere in the world. Students should work with their advisor to select synchronous and asynchronous courses that will work with their schedule.
    • We will implement an expanded, three-term academic calendar with fall and spring semesters as well as a 10-week summer term, to give students greater flexibility and control as they plan their academic year.
    • SPE will continue to program virtual events – including readings, film screenings, panel discussions, and symposia – open to the entire New School community and the public. Additional events will be exclusive to SPE students, including alumni career panels, mixers, and networking opportunities.

Details related to specific schools and programs within SPE is listed below. Additional information is also available on the SPE Remote website.

    New Students

New students will be offered a robust schedule of virtual orientation events, as well as individualized advising from their academic program's leadership, student affairs staff, and faculty advisors. Advising sessions will take place via Zoom or telephone depending on students' preference. Students should check their email address for updates.

    Online Information Sessions

New and continuing students should contact their program's Student Affairs representative for advising. Group and individual advising sessions are available throughout the summer.
