• NYC3 Governors Island project
  • The New School and CUNY Shortlisted in Global Climate Solutions Competition

Governors Island is the focus of an important New School partnership with The City University of New York (CUNY) and 30+ other groups to propose plans for a new climate solutions hub called NYC3 (New York Coastal Climate Center). The collaboration represents an important new milestone in The New School’s long history of initiatives aimed at making cities more sustainable, equitable, and livable.

“Climate change is among the most urgent problems of our time. Solutions will require not only science but also design and social science to inform how we lead substantive transformation.”

    —Dwight A. McBride, PhD

    President, The New School

The NYC3 team is submitting its innovative design in response to a call from the Trust for Governors Island and to NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ ambitious economic recovery plans. One of four finalists invited to submit a proposal, NYC3 presented its plan in late September, and the Trust expects to announce a winner in the summer of 2023. Planning is underway to further involve students, faculty, alumni, and the public in bringing the NYC3 proposal to life. Check back to find updates on NYC3’s work and learn how you can join us in making NYC a model for sustainable and social justice–focused urban resilience everywhere.
